At Miracles In Sight, we are focused on meeting the needs of our surgeon partners to help you better serve your patients. MIS recently expanded its tissue processing services to include traditional, pre-loaded and free-floating DMEK grafts. Prepared tissue offers surgeons the ability to perform the procedure and avoid the difficulties that come with donor tissue preparation and handling.
Benefits of DMEK Prepared Tissue
Across the world, Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) is becoming the standard of care for endothelial dysfunction. Corneal surgeons are increasingly finding DMEK to be the best surgical option for their patients but are hesitant to learn this newer technique.
The free-floating and pre-loaded grafts from MIS help reduce the learning curve associated with DMEK preparation and offers several advantages:
Pre-loaded and pre-punched tissue that is reliably peeled. Each graft is expertly evaluated to ensure successful tissue preparation.
Ease of use, reduced surgical time
Using pre-loaded or free-floating grafts eliminates the stress of damaging the tissue during preparation and saves as much as 15 minutes in the operating room.
MIS provides pre-punched grafts to your specific diameter, “S” stamp markings to aid you in graft orientation and offers pre-loaded grafts in a modified Jones Tube.
What Our Surgeon Partners Are Saying About DMEK Grafts
We frequently collaborate with our surgeon partners to test new techniques, products and establish benchmarks for success. After nearly a year of offering MIS pre-loaded and pre-punched DMEK grafts, our partner surgeons share their experience with the prepared tissue and its impact on the procedure.
“In the operating room, I am always looking at ways to minimize risk and eliminate variables to improve outcomes. Before, there was always the possibility of damaging Descemet’s membrane when preparing it in the operating room, and now that step can be done ahead of time. I feel more confident now that my patients will be getting the highest quality DMEK tissue, and having it pre-loaded makes the surgery that much safer and predictable.”
– Steven Shaw, M.D., North Carolina Eye, Nose & Throat, Durham, N.C.
“I have had very good experience with this tissue – the orientation, highlighted with an ‘S’ mark, is easily identified, and handling the tissue within the Jones Tube injector has been straightforward. I must say that it saves an average of at least 10 to 15 minutes per case. My clinical results have been excellent, with similar rapid visual recovery as my surgeon-prepared DMEK patients. I would encourage any surgeon currently performing DMEK to consider trying the pre-punched and pre-loaded grafts.”
– Terry Semchyshyn, M.D., Duke Eye Center for Vision Correction, Winston-Salem, N.C.
“Pre-loaded DMEK from Miracles In Sight saves me 10 minutes per case and relieves the stress of tearing tissue during preparation. The tissue is pre-stained and marked with an ‘S’ stamp and simply needs to be attached to a syringe and injected into the eye. I couldn’t imagine going back to preparing tissue myself.”
– David Tremblay, M.D., Mann Eye Institute, Austin, TX
