Our history informs our future.

Although the first corneal transplant surgery was performed successfully in eastern Europe in 1905, the first eye bank wasn’t established until 1944. Seven years later, a team of visionaries in North Carolina saw the life-changing possibilities of corneal transplants and worked to establish The North Carolina Eye and Human Tissue Bank. This organization evolved to become The North Carolina Eye Bank in 1996, the fifth eye bank established in the United States.

In 2014, the organization changed its name to Miracles In Sight to reflect the broader role it was playing in helping to restore sight through corneal transplantation. Miracles In Sight expanded its eye banking program in 2015 through a new partnership in South Carolina. In 2020, a new partnership in Texas allowed the organization to expand again.

From the beginning, the organization has been committed to providing the highest quality tissue for transplants and research. Our team has helped establish many best practices used in eye banks everywhere. We collaborate with doctors and researchers to develop innovative solutions, and support others in our field with advanced training, research grants and funding for equipment.

Through active philanthropy, we support eye banks around the world and provide corneal tissue for those in need.
